Our pruning project for this winter was done on an old orchard located between Holmes Hollow and Schoolhouse Hollow on SR 321N close to Sugar Bay. Our organization was joined by the 4-H Junior Outdoorsmen Club from Smethport with leaders Len and Jody Groshek. Scott Reitz, Wildlife Biologist with the ANF coordinated the project.
It was a chilly morning, and after an introduction by Scott on the use of tools, we had a talk on safety, and hard hats and goggles were handed out. By this time, everybody was looking to get on with the work just to warm up. And we sure did! While Gerry was doing the release cutting on the upper end, we started pruning trees closer to the road. Some of us were pruning while others were building brush piles.
Although we had one of the best crowds ever for a pruning project, there is still a considerable amount of work to be done at this site. I was worried about finding enough work for everybody but as it turned out, there was plenty of work to be done.
We called it a day at about 11:30-11:45 and everybody enjoyed a lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers. Many thanks to Len and Jody and the Junior Outdoorsmen Club for the help they gave us on this project.
We had a total of 30 volunteers helping on this project, 18 members of the 4-H Junior Outdoorsmen Club, 2 ANF employees, and 10 volunteers from Kinzua Fish & Wildlife Association. This included Jerry Dixon and Scott Reitz from the ANF, and Rob Abplanalp, Bill Barr, Bob Boyer, Merle Caldwell, Wally Dyne, Terry Koehler, John Lorenzo, Rian Rich, Guy Waldman, and Bob Wallin from KF&WA. Thank you all!
